Boston Red Sox Star Liam Hendriks Opens Up About Chilling Death Threats After Mets Loss

Boston Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks took to Instagram recently to share a distressing reality he’s faced: horrifying death threats following the team’s disappointing loss to the New York Mets. This incident highlights an alarming aspect of modern sports culture.

In that game, Hendriks stepped in to relieve the Red Sox ace, Garrett Crochet, in a tightly contested matchup. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the sixth inning, he was optimistic and ready to uphold the team’s momentum. After effectively retiring the side in that inning, he returned for the seventh but faced a challenging setback, allowing three hits and three earned runs as the Mets clinched a 5-1 victory, avoiding a sweep.

After the game, Hendriks bravely revealed on his Instagram story that he received gut-wrenching death threats from a small group of misguided fans. What makes this situation even more unsettling is that some of these threats included disturbing jokes about his courageous battle with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It’s one thing to critique an athlete’s performance, but to mock someone’s fight for their life crosses an unfathomable line.

This distressing behavior is far too common in the realm of professional sports. It’s difficult to fathom why some individuals feel empowered to hurl threats and engage in cruelty from the safety of their screens. For anyone to stoop so low as to disparage Hendriks over something as significant as his struggle with cancer reflects not only a lack of empathy but a troubling sense of detachment from the very human element of sports. One can only hope these individuals will one day turn their energy towards something constructive, rather than perpetuating negativity.

For Red Sox fans looking to point fingers at Hendriks, it’s worth considering a few other factors. Alex Cora’s bullpen management has come under scrutiny, as Crochet was performing well, allowing only one earned run through 5.1 innings. An offense that struggled to produce against a floundering Mets team certainly deserves its share of the blame as well.

Perhaps Hendriks’ frustration with his limited playing time also contributed to the backlash, but there’s simply no justification for the vitriol he faced. Every athlete deserves the space to express their feelings without fearing for their safety or wellbeing.

### Liam Hendriks Needs Time to Find His Game

Hendriks’ situation is compounded by the fact that he missed the entire 2024 season recovering from Tommy John Surgery, a common yet serious procedure that requires significant rehabilitation. As a three-time All-Star, he’s demonstrated resilience and talent, but it’s a tall order for any player to return to form immediately after such a lengthy absence.

Allowing him a few more games to find his rhythm seems not just fair, but necessary. Athletes are humans, too, navigating physical and mental challenges. As fans, it’s essential to remember that they’re working hard every day to regain their abilities and that setbacks can happen to anyone.

In light of these events, it’s crucial to support athletes like Hendriks. Let’s cheer for them when they struggle, not tear them down. As we humanize sports, we foster a community where empathy and understanding lead the way, making the game more enjoyable for everyone involved.
