Braves Considering Comeback with Fan-Favorite All-Star Slugger for $65 Million

MLB Network

The Atlanta Braves are gearing up for a crucial offseason filled with significant decisions that will impact their composition for the upcoming season. Key areas of focus include securing a dependable shortstop, enhancing their starting rotation, and revitalizing their bullpen. Each of these components plays a vital role in reshaping the team’s strategy moving forward.

Recently, Braves president of baseball operations, Alex Anthopoulos, revealed in an interview with MLB.com that the organization has not entirely ruled out the possibility of re-signing outfielder Marcell Ozuna. He stated, “We haven’t closed the door on guys like Marcell Ozuna, but we just don’t know.” This statement has reignited discussions regarding Ozuna’s future with the team.

Although Ozuna faced a challenging season, culminating in a .673 OPS over 91 games post-June, he showcased potential earlier in the 2023 and 2024 seasons with a more encouraging .916 OPS. These contrasting statistics suggest that Ozuna could still serve as a valuable designated hitter for the Braves, should they opt to retain him.

A strategic decision regarding a new shortstop could also unlock opportunities for bolstering their offensive lineup. If the Braves successfully secure a shortstop, they can then concentrate on acquiring the right hitter for the designated hitter position, thus maintaining flexibility as the offseason progresses.

Atlanta Braves Exploring Other Offensive and Defensive Options

In addition to their interest in Ozuna, the Braves have been exploring options for a shortstop, including inquiring about Mauricio Dubón, a two-time Gold Glove Award winner currently with the Houston Astros. This interest signifies the team’s proactive approach in addressing their defensive and offensive requirements for the upcoming season.

Dubón has maintained a .677 OPS over the last three years, suggesting he could offer solid defensive skills alongside a modest offensive contribution. His versatility could be particularly beneficial for the Braves as they seek to enhance their fielding options while also keeping avenues open for offensive hitters like Ozuna.

The moves made by the Braves in the coming weeks will not only dictate how they recoup lost power but will also outline their strategy for filling essential roster spots. Discussions surrounding potential signings, from Marcell Ozuna to Mauricio Dubón, underline the Braves’ commitment to carefully evaluating every opportunity to construct a well-rounded and competitive team.

As the offseason unfolds, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Braves navigate these pivotal decisions that could ultimately define their success in the next season.
