Gerrit Cole’s Comeback Journey: What His Return Means for Fans and the Team

YESNetwork/YouTube

Fans of the New York Yankees entered the 2025 season full of hope for a redemption arc following their heartbreaking loss in the 2024 World Series. However, their optimism was quickly dashed when the team announced that star pitcher Gerrit Cole would require Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for the entire season.

This surgical procedure typically entails a lengthy recovery period of 12 to 18 months, and the Yankees confirmed that Cole would not be ready for Opening Day 2026. Nevertheless, positive news emerged from his rehabilitation progress as he was spotted throwing off a mound at Yankee Stadium, a significant milestone in his recovery.

Gerrit Cole on track to rejoin Yankees’ rotation in 2026

Gerrit Cole began his throwing regimen in early August, approximately five months post-surgery. Initially, he was able to throw around 20 pitches from a flat ground before making strides to pitch off a mound. The Yankees are cautious in their approach, planning to minimize his workload over the offseason while Cole continues consultations with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the surgeon who conducted his operation. If Cole’s progress remains on track, he could be ready to face live hitters during spring training.

The Yankees had high expectations for their pitching staff for 2025, highlighted by the acquisition of Max Fried to complement Cole at the top of the rotation. They also had promising talent in last season’s Rookie of the Year, Luis Gil, and veteran Carlos Rodon. Unfortunately, injuries hampered these aspirations early in the season. In addition to Cole’s absence, Gil was placed on the injured list with a severe lat strain and didn’t return to play until August.

Despite these setbacks, the Yankees discovered a bright spot in rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler, who is expected to play a vital role in the pitching lineup for the upcoming season. However, Carlos Rodon’s return has also been delayed due to his need for surgery to address a bone spur in his elbow.

If both Cole and Rodon can regain their health—alongside the emerging talent of Schlittler and the established skill of Fried—the Yankees could finally achieve the formidable rotation they envisioned. The prospect of a starting staff comprising Cole, Fried, Schlittler, Gil, and Rodon certainly captivates the imagination of Yankees fans who continue to hold onto hope for another championship run.
