The Seattle Mariners have recently demonstrated their unwavering commitment to first baseman Josh Naylor by signing him to a substantial contract extension. After acquiring Naylor at the trade deadline last season, his new five-year contract worth $92.5 million underscores the team’s confidence in his abilities and potential contributions to the club.
As he approached free agency this offseason, many players in Naylor’s position might consider exploring the market for better opportunities. However, the 28-year-old appeared more inclined to stay put in Seattle. Speaking on Tuesday, Naylor expressed his deep satisfaction with the organization, stating he is “more than comfortable here” and sees no need to weigh other options around Major League Baseball.
“Of course, I could have tested the open market,” Naylor acknowledged, as reported by Adam Jude. “But after discussions with my agent and family, I felt strongly about where I wanted to be. We came to terms on a deal that works for both parties. While maximizing the contract is important, I find comfort and happiness here. I love the city, the fans, and especially my teammates. I’m extremely grateful to be back.”
Naylor’s Motivation Following Disappointing Playoff Exit
Naylor’s performance last season further substantiated his value to the Mariners. With an impressive .295 batting average, alongside 20 home runs and 92 RBIs—performance that included his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks—it’s clear why the team considered retaining him essential. One compelling reason for his return to Seattle is the desire to rectify the team’s previous playoff disappointment. The Mariners faced a heart-wrenching loss against the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series, leaving players and fans longing for redemption.
“I wanted to come back, not out of obligation but because I owe it to this fan base, this city, and my teammates to strive for a World Series within the next five years—or even multiple championships,” Naylor expressed passionately. “I want to provide something back to everyone who supports us. I enjoyed my time here immensely and am excited about the journey ahead with this team.”
With this renewed commitment, both Naylor and the Mariners set their sights on the future, aiming to contend for championships and further engage their devoted fanbase.
